Advent Devotional December 2

posted on December 05

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. Romans 15:13

In the fall of 1998, my husband and I found out that we were to be first-time grandparents. Our sweet little Ashe was born in January 1999 and knitted his way into our family with ease.

In 2001, Ashe was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor that doctors said had been there for some time. We tried chemo for a short while, but it didn’t work.

Knowing we had limited time, we made moments count. When he came to visit, he and I would hunker down in bed each night with a stack of books to read. Then we would say our prayers and before he went to sleep I would sing “Jesus Loves Me” to him.

Many, many prayers were said on Ashe’s behalf, and we hoped that God would heal this sweet child, but on the morning of April 23, 2003, Ashe went to live with Jesus.

People have often asked me how I could find such peace in this tragedy. It is simply because I have hope through Jesus Christ. I cannot begin to count the times that He has provided for me and has sustained me through life’s unpleasant moments. I knew then, and I know still, that whatever comes my way, MY Jesus will be my source of hope, joy and peace.

I have joy and peace knowing that Ashe is with Jesus, and I abound in hope knowing I will see him again someday.
